"At this point on October 29, l792, William Broughton of the Vancouver Expedition discovers and names Mount Hood (ll,235 ft.): "A very distant high snowy mountain now appeared rising beautifully conspicuous in the midst of an extensive tract of low or moderately elevated land . . . we had a beautiful view of a very remarkable high mountain whose summit, and a considerable extent below it, was covered with snow and presented a very grand view." The mountain honors Admiral Alexander Hood (l727-l8l4) of the Royal Navy." From an old atlas of maps of the Pacific Northwest. |
